La estructura es y ha sido siempre un componente esencial de la Arquitectura y la Ingeniería Civil, y son precisamente el Ingeniero y el Arquitecto quienes, durante el proceso de diseño, deben crear o inventar la estructura y darle proporciones correctas. Para crear y darle proporciones correctas deben seguir el camino intuitivo y el científico, tratando de lograr una combinación armónica entre la intuición personal y la ciencia estructural.

El diseño es un proceso creativo mediante el cual se definen las características de un sistema de manera tal que cumpla, en forma óptima, con sus objetivos. Precisamente, el objetivo de un sistema estructural es equilibrar las fuerzas a las que va a estar sometido, y resistir las solicitaciones sin colapso o mal comportamiento (excesivas deformaciones). La bondad del diseño depende esencialmente del acierto que se haya tenido en componer un sistema estructural, o mecanismo resistente, que resulte el más idóneo para resistir las acciones exteriores.

Los ingenieros y Arquitectos Costa Rica M3cr  saben que deben siempre de obtener un rendimiento balanceado entre la parte rígida y plástica de los elementos, ya que en muchas ocasiones, un exceso en alguno de éstos dos aspectos pueden conducir al fallo de la estructura.


Usualmente los materiales utilizados en la parte estructural deben cumplir otro tipo de funciones, tales como aislante térmico, acústico, intemperie, impermeabilidad, división de aposentos y otros propios dentro de una estructura.

Además, dentro de otras funciones que cumplen los elementos dentro del diseño estructural están los aspectos arquitectónicos, los cuales deben ser integrados dentro del diseño estructural, a fin de obtener el mejor rendimiento de la estructura total.

El diseño de una estructura parte de una tipología base para a continuación realizar el cálculo adecuado de resistencias en cada una de sus partes conocidos los materiales y las cargas actuantes.

Para un diseño adecuado se deben tener en cuenta las combinaciones de cargas y en general cualquier situación a la cual se pueda ver sometida la estructura diseñada.

Las tipologías de estructuras se pueden dividir atendiendo a diferentes aspectos:
